The Facts:
Bad Breath can not be cured or controlled by using candies, mints, gum, mouth sprays, tooth brushing or mouth rinses which only mask and overpower the underlying odor for a short period of time. The fact is, bad breath can not be totally cured but it can be controlled and managed.
What is Breath Odor?
Bad breath and taste disorders is caused by Anaerobic Sulfur Producing Bacteria, that live below the surface of the tongue, in the throat and often in the tonsils. These bacteria are supposed to be there, because they assist in digestion by breaking down proteins in food, mucus, blood and broken-down oral tissue. Under certain conditions, these bacteria start to break-down proteins at a very high rate and these proteins are dense with sulfur.
When the beneficial bacteria come in contact with these proteins, the odorous and lousy tasting sulfur compounds are released from the back of the tongue and throat as Hydrogen Sulfide (rotten egg smell), Methyl Mercaptan (old sock smell), cadaverine and putrescine referred to as Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSC's). Volatile is taken to mean vaporous and effervescent, two adjectives which accurately describe their ability to offend other people instantly.
Everyone in the world has the same group of bacteria in their mouth. You cannot catch bad breath from someone, even by kissing. Since they are part of our normal oral flora, you cannot permanently remove them from your mouth.
